My Journey Through the Best Presidential Biographies
During the past 1, days Ive journeyed back through time to witness some of the most dramatic moments in American history.
Ive observed the struggle to draft a constitution, watched as the young nation almost tore itself apart, and looked on as millions of Americans struggled through the Great Depression.
After 33 presidents, biographies and over 80, pages Im two-thirds of the way through this great adventure. And yet nothing about it has grown stale, tired or even remotely mundane.
Thats why I can begin my journey through the biographies of Dwight Eisenhower with more than a modicum of optimism. From a distance he seems detached, humorless and a bit uninteresting. But I know from experience that most presidents are far more complex (and fascinating) than their two-dimensional caricatures.
Im beginning with Jean Edward Smiths Eisenhower In War and Peace. This is my third presidential biography by Smith; his biographies of Grant and FDR were my favorites of those two presidents so my expectations are high!
Next Ill be reading Carlo DEstes Eisenhower: A Soldiers Life. This biography has a solid, scholarly reputation and appears to be comprehensive and exhaustive. Hi

My Journey Through the Best Presidential Biographies
[Updated]
Like many of the presidents whose lives Ive explored during the past 4+ years, I found Dwight Eisenhowers pre-presidency more interesting than his years in the White House.
In order to understand Eisenhowers character and core principles it is tempting to study his actions as Supreme Allied Commander during World War II or his presidential legacy of peace, prosperity and probity.
But the best insight into Eisenhower is gained by observing his evolution under the guidance of Generals Conner, Pershing, MacArthur and Marshall during the formative period of his long military career. This is where Eisenhower was molded, hardened and prepared for not just the D-Day invasion but, ultimately, the presidency.
During the three months I spent with the thirty-fourth president I read eleven books, including four traditional single-volume biographies of Eisenhower, a two-volume series, a series abridgement and four narrowly-focused books.
Somewhat unexpectedly, Eisenhower actually reminds me in many ways of his predecessor, Harry Truman. Both grew up in small-town America, both served in the military, both had a knack for being in the right place at the right time, and both possessed reputations for absolute i
