The panel was originally part of a much larger altarpiece commissioned from Andrea del Verrocchio between 1475-1477 for the oratory built by Bishop Donato de' Medici. This chapel is now part of the Cathedral of Pistoia. The work will join its corresponding Annunciation by di Credi already preserved in the Louvre. Another depicting A Miracle of Saint Donatus of Arezzo is preserved in the Worcester Art Museum. The painting, which depicts Saint John the Baptist leaving the desert, was acquired at auction in 1868 and was seemingly purchased from the descendants of Edmond Louvet (1836-1906).
Although works by Lorenzo di Credi are particularly rare, Sotheby's New York sold the following Adoration ascribed to di Credi and Workshop in May 2022.
