Poreotics and Racialized Performativity
Like many other Asian Americans in my generation, I was an avid consumer of YouTube content growing up. Seeing Asian Americans internet personalities and performers exchange jokes, show off musical talents, and act in short films flawlessly to millions of fans and subscribers was hugely influential on my own self-image, especially during my years as an insecure middle-schooler. It was through one such figure, Nigahiga, that I first stumbled across the Asian American dance crew Poreotics. Although presented through a comedic skit, complete with ridiculous accents, I was immediately entranced by Poreotics’ sleek and robotic dance moves and soon watched their other stunning performances at various televised competitions.
Fast forward more than half a decade, and here I was, standing face-to-face with the very members of Poreotics that I used to gush over virtually. As a member of the Celebrasia planning committee, I along with a few other Northwestern students had the privilege of were meeting with one of our headliner acts to welcome them onto campus over a lunch of deep-dish. After some interesting conversations and rehearsals, it was time for the official performance at the show, which was as every bit impressive as what I ha
