III. INTERVIEW WITH MARILYN STRATHERN[Up]
Alberto Corsín Jiménez (ACJ): The first question I want to ask is about The Gender of the Gift because this year (2018) is its thirtieth anniversary. You have often noted that you wrote the book as a solution to a specific problem, namely, the way feminist debates in the late seventies and eighties were configuring gender as something ‘owned’ by bodies and persons. Could you tell me a little bit about the situated nature of those debates then, but also about how you reflect on both the book and the development of feminist scholarship and activism these past thirty years?
Marilyn Strathern (MS): Thank you for reminding me of that. I have more recently returned to other problems and solutions with respect to certain usages in that book, for instance the ‘dividual’ person; this was a (conceptual) solution, as you note, to what I saw as problems for analysis posed by the theoretical and vernacular antithesis of individual and society ( Strathern, Marilyn. 2018. ‘Persons and Partible Persons’, in Matei Candea (ed.), Schools and Styles of Anthropological Theory: 236-246. José Alfredo Jiménez Sandoval (Spanish pronunciation:[xoˈsealˈfɾeðoxiˈmenes]; 19 January 1926 – 23 November 1973) was a Mexican singer-songwriter, whose songs are regarded as the basis of modern Regional Mexican music and Rancheras.[1]
Early life
[edit]Jiménez was born in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Mexico.[1] His father died when he was ten years old, and his mother moved the family to Mexico City. Jiménez worked from a young age to help support his family. He took a job as a waiter at a Yucatacan restaurant in Santa María de la Ribera[2] named La Sirena. While working there, he started writing songs and singing with a group called Los Rebeldes.[3]
Career
[edit]The singer Miguel Aceves Mejía claims to have discovered him from Los Rebeldes. According to Mejía, Jiménez did not play an instrument and did not even know the Spanish word for "waltz" or what keys his songs were in.[2] Following Mejía's instruction, Jiménez auditioned at the Radio Station XEW's Amanecer Ranchero together with the Mariachi Vargas and Rubé
